The low-level GPU access is what actually delivers the performance benefit over older DirectX versions. Developers get much more direct control over hardware resources, which translates into games that run more efficiently and consistently, provided they’re coded to take advantage of it.
DirectX Raytracing is the feature that’s had the biggest visible impact on how games look over the past several years. Reflections, shadows, and lighting that behave like real physics rather than pre-baked approximations noticeably changes how immersive a scene feels, and DX12 Ultimate standardizing that across PC and Xbox means developers can target both platforms with one feature set.
