Tails 7.15 is a Linux-based operating system designed for privacy. It runs from a USB stick or DVD and routes internet connections through the Tor network, helping reduce the amount of identifying information exposed during online activity.
If you’re exploring Linux distributions, you can also read about Manjaro Linux. Manjaro is a general-purpose desktop distribution, while Tails focuses on privacy and is designed for use without leaving a normal working session on the computer’s internal drive.
Tails can be useful when you need to browse the web, communicate, or handle sensitive documents on a computer you don’t normally use. It includes privacy-focused applications and routes compatible internet traffic through Tor by default.
The system runs as a live operating system. You boot from your prepared USB drive, use the included tools, and shut down when finished. Tails is designed to leave no trace on the computer’s internal storage by default, although files you deliberately save outside its protected environment and activity on other systems can still leave records.
Key features
- Tor network: Routes compatible internet traffic through Tor to help conceal your original IP address from the websites you visit.
- Live operating system: Boot from a USB drive without installing Tails on the computer’s internal disk.
- Privacy-focused applications: Includes tools for web browsing and common personal tasks.
- Encrypted persistent storage: Supports a persistent storage feature on USB installations for selected files and settings, when configured.
- Reduced local traces: The default session is designed to avoid saving ordinary activity to the computer’s internal storage.
- Secure communication: Includes applications that can support private communication and document handling.
- Free and open source: Tails is developed as a free software project.
- USB-based workflow: Carry your prepared system between compatible computers, subject to hardware and boot restrictions.

System requirements
- Operating system image: Tails 7.15 ISO image.
- USB drive: A suitable USB drive with enough capacity for the installation instructions.
- Processor: Compatible 64-bit x86-64 computer.
- Memory: At least 2 GB of RAM is generally recommended for running Tails.
- Display: A monitor supported by the system’s graphics environment.
- Boot support: A computer that can boot from USB.
- Internet connection: Needed for downloading the image and for online activity.
Check the official Tails documentation for the exact hardware requirements and supported installation method. Creating a bootable USB drive can erase its existing contents, so back up any files stored on it first.
Why I recommend Tails
Tails is worth considering when privacy is a priority and you want a dedicated environment for sensitive online tasks. Its live-session design means you can use a compatible computer without installing a full operating system on its internal drive.
Tor provides an extra layer between your connection and the websites you visit, but it doesn’t make every action anonymous. Logging into a personal account, downloading identifiable files, or sharing personal details can still reveal who you are.
