Video Copilot Element 3D

Bringing real 3D objects into Adobe After Effects used to mean bouncing footage between Cinema 4D or 3ds Max and AE, rendering passes separately, then compositing everything back together by hand. That workflow works, but it’s slow, and it breaks your creative flow every time you need to tweak a camera angle.

Element 3D is the plugin that fixed that problem for a lot of motion designers. It’s built by Video Copilot, and version 2.2.3 (build 2192) is the current release of their 3D object and particle render engine that runs directly inside After Effects. I keep ReelSmart Motion Blur in the same AE plugin folder, since it complements the 3D renders Element 3D produces with more realistic motion on fast camera moves.

What makes Element 3D different from a typical 3D pipeline is that it renders in near real-time inside the AE timeline. You import OBJ or C4D files along with their textures, and instead of waiting on a full render to see how a model looks, you get GPU-accelerated feedback almost instantly. That alone changes how you work: you can nudge a light, adjust a material, and see the result without leaving the composition window.

The current build adds group symmetry creation, dynamic group folder reflections, and a matte reflection mode, on top of an updated interface aimed at speed. Shadows and ambient occlusion have 2 modes: a faster OpenGL-based approach for iterating quickly, and a ray-traced option for final renders where accuracy matters more than speed.

Key Features

  • Real-time 3D object and particle rendering inside After Effects
  • Imports OBJ and C4D model formats, including animated OBJ sequences
  • Physically based materials with drag-and-drop realistic surfaces
  • Group Folders for combining and transforming multiple 3D models together
  • Text and mask extrusion with built-in bevel presets
  • OpenGL and ray-traced shadow and ambient occlusion modes
  • Support for HDR, EXR, PNG, and JPG texture formats
  • Compatible with Multi-Frame Rendering in current After Effects versions
  • Parametric primitive objects usable as particle replicator shapes

System Requirements

  • Windows 10 or later, or macOS 10.14 or later
  • Adobe After Effects CS6 or newer (current AE version recommended for MFR support)
  • OpenGL-compatible GPU, dedicated graphics card recommended
  • 8 GB RAM minimum, 16 GB recommended for complex scenes
  • OpenCL-compatible GPU required for ray-traced shadows and AO

Why I Recommend

The near real-time preview is the entire reason this plugin has stuck around as long as it has. Most 3D integration tools make you wait through a render just to check if a light angle looks right. Element 3D shows you almost immediately, which turns 3D work inside AE from a slow back-and-forth into something you can actually iterate on live.

The group folder system is underrated too. Once a scene has more than a handful of objects, being able to transform and animate a whole group as one unit instead of adjusting each piece separately saves a genuine amount of setup time on anything with repeated elements, like particle arrays or logo builds.

If you’re working across 3D and motion graphics regularly, it’s worth browsing our Video Editing section for tools that pair well with it, especially for anyone bringing in assets from a full 3D suite like Autodesk 3ds Max before importing into Element 3D for final compositing.
