Procedural, node-based workflows have a steep learning curve compared to more direct 3D tools, but they solve a problem those tools genuinely can’t: building an effect that regenerates correctly when the underlying scene changes, instead of manually redoing the work by hand. Autodesk Maya handles character animation and general 3D work well, but for complex particle, fluid, and destruction simulation specifically, Houdini’s procedural approach is what most VFX studios actually build their pipelines around.
Houdini FX 19.5.435 is developed by SideFX, and this release focuses on quality-of-life improvements across modeling, character effects, simulation, the Solaris scene layout toolset, and the Karma renderer, rather than one single headline feature. Autodesk 3ds Max covers a lot of general modeling and rendering ground, but Houdini FX specifically adds the full particle and dynamics toolset that makes it the standard for explosions, fluid sims, and destruction work in film and game production.
Pyro, Houdini’s smoke and fire simulation system, picked up real workflow improvements in 19.5: source instancing, previously limited to GPU-based simulations using the Minimal OpenCL solver, is now available as a general tool across the board. That lets artists apply transformations to individual sources and combine multiple different Pyro sources within one simulation, building up a reusable library of fire and smoke elements that can be composited together rather than rebuilt from scratch each time.
Hair and fur grooming tools reached full production readiness in this release too, moving from what SideFX describes as more of a work-in-progress toolset to something ready for professional use. The crowd simulation look-at system was reworked to support multiple simultaneous targets across different agents, and SideFX Labs, the experimental add-on toolkit, gained a Kelvin Wakes deformer for generating realistic boat wakes in near real time, alongside scan-cleanup tools that include a Photoshop-style spectral transfer feature for repairing surface detail on scanned meshes.

- Dedicated GPU with substantial VRAM for Karma XPU and viewport performance
- Several GB free disk space for installation
Why I Recommend
The Pyro source instancing update is a genuine production time-saver, not just a technical footnote. Being able to build a reusable library of fire, smoke, and explosion elements, then combine and transform them per-shot instead of resimulating from scratch, cuts real iteration time on effects-heavy work.
Where this software is a hard sell is cost and learning curve, and it’s worth being honest about that upfront. A node-locked Houdini FX license runs $4,495, and the procedural workflow takes real time to learn even for experienced 3D artists coming from Maya or 3ds Max. This isn’t software to pick up casually, it’s a serious investment aimed at studios and dedicated FX artists, and the free Houdini Apprentice edition is a much more sensible starting point if you’re just evaluating whether the procedural approach fits how you work.
For anyone building a VFX and simulation pipeline, our Video Editing section has more tools worth pairing with a dedicated simulation package like Houdini FX.
