Physical modeling synthesis has always had a small, dedicated audience compared to the more mainstream subtractive and wavetable approaches. I use Xfer Records Serum 2 for most wavetable sound design work, but Rippler is chasing something genuinely different, acoustic and semi-acoustic tones built from modeling how real physical objects actually vibrate and resonate.
reFX Rippler 1.0.39 is developed by reFX, better known for the preset-heavy Nexus line, and this release is a notable departure from that identity. Instead of a browse-and-tweak preset instrument, Rippler is built for shaping resonators, exciters, oscillators, and modulation paths directly, aimed at sound designers who want to build acoustic-inspired tones from the ground up rather than start from a factory patch. I also keep Native Instruments Massive X installed for wavetable and modulation-heavy sound design, but Rippler’s resonator modeling covers a texture space neither Massive X nor a typical subtractive synth reaches.
The signal path starts with an Exciter section, which can use included samples, imported audio, sidechain input, or a tweakable noise generator, feeding into 2 independent Resonator layers modeling the physical behavior of strings, tubes, membranes, and bells. 12 physical resonator models are included, covering String, Beam, Bell, Membrane, Plate, Drumhead, Djembe, Vibraphone, Marimba, and both open and closed Tube types, alongside a Manual Resonator Generator for hand-drawing custom harmonic structures with real-time morphing between snapshots.
The dual-layer architecture (Layer A and Layer B plus a global master stage) means Rippler can hold 2 completely different timbres simultaneously in layered or stacked mode, a genuine advantage for live performance. On the modulation and effects side, it packs 4 LFOs, 4 envelopes, random generators, full MIDI and MPE support for expressive per-note control, custom modulation curves, an arpeggiator, and 13 effect types, including distortion, chorus, phaser, compression, delay, bucket delay, reverb, and particle effects, applied per-layer or globally.

Why I Recommend
The Manual Resonator Generator is what separates this from most synths marketed as “physical modeling.” A lot of instruments in this category are really just curated preset collections. Being able to hand-draw partials and morph between configurations in real time gives actual sound designers a genuine editing surface, not just a knob-tweaking layer over fixed algorithms.
The dual-timbre stacking is a practical performance feature worth calling out too. Holding 2 completely independent sounds in layer or stacked mode within a single patch means less patch-switching mid-performance, which matters if you’re using this live rather than purely in a studio context.
For anyone building out a sound design toolkit, it’s worth browsing our Audio Software section for complementary synths and effects that pair well with a resonator-based instrument like Rippler.
