Not everyone wants a subscription for something as basic as writing documents and building spreadsheets. I’ve recommended Office 365 Small Business Premium to clients who need the cloud features and constant updates, but plenty of people just want Word and Excel to open, work, and not ask for a monthly payment.
MS Office 2021 is Microsoft’s answer to that. It’s a perpetual license release, meaning you buy it once and use it indefinitely on one device, no subscription required. I also keep Office 2016 around for comparison on older hardware, but 2021 is the version I’d actually recommend now since it’s the newer of the 2 non-subscription options still available.
The suite covers the core desktop apps most people actually use: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, and Access, depending on which edition you buy. Office 2021 receives security and quality updates from Microsoft, but it doesn’t get the ongoing feature rollouts or AI integrations that Microsoft 365 subscribers see. That’s the trade-off: a fixed feature set in exchange for no recurring cost.

Why I Recommend
For anyone who’s tired of paying monthly for software that hasn’t fundamentally changed in years, the one-time purchase model is genuinely appealing. You install it, activate it, and it keeps working without another bill showing up.
The trade-off worth knowing about upfront is the support window. Mainstream support for the consumer editions is expected to end in October 2026, roughly 5 years after release, half the support window older perpetual Office versions used to get. The software keeps working past that date, but you won’t see further updates from Microsoft after support ends.
