Engineering teams juggling model-based design, embedded code analysis, and data verification usually end up stitching together several disconnected tools to cover the full pipeline. I use Minitab for statistical process control specifically, but MATLAB is the tool I reach for the moment a project moves into custom algorithm development, simulation, or embedded systems work.

MATLAB R2026a is the first major MathWorks release of 2026, and it leans heavily into AI-assisted engineering workflows without abandoning the rigor and traceability engineering teams actually need. It’s developed by MathWorks, and this release introduces generative AI tools built specifically for grounded, verifiable engineering rather than general-purpose chat assistance. I also keep EViews 13 Enterprise around for dedicated econometrics work, but for simulation, control systems, and embedded development, MATLAB remains the broader and more flexible platform.

The headline additions are Simulink Copilot and Polyspace Copilot. Simulink Copilot gives guidance based on your own models, team-defined processes, and official MathWorks documentation, generating model explanations, answering questions about model behavior, and helping locate specific blocks and subsystems. Polyspace Copilot does the same for embedded software analysis, interpreting static analysis results and helping resolve flagged issues, alongside a new Polyspace as You Code feature that checks coding rules and flags defects in real time as you write.

Beyond the AI tooling, this release adds real language and performance improvements: automatic differentiation now works directly in base MATLAB for solving systems of ordinary differential equations, Database Toolbox ships with a built-in DuckDB engine so you no longer need a separate database server for many workflows, and a new Time Series Modeler app handles deep learning-based time series prediction without requiring you to hand-build a network architecture.
