Windows’ default taskbar hasn’t fundamentally changed in years, and for anyone who’s outgrown it, the options are either a full theming overhaul or a dedicated dock replacement. Rainmeter handles widget-style desktop customization well, but Nexus is aimed at a more specific job: replacing how you actually launch and organize applications day to day.

Winstep Nexus Ultimate 26.6 is developed by Winstep, and it’s a premium desktop docking system for Windows that goes well beyond the free base Nexus dock, adding task grouping, hotkey-triggered sub-docks, a battery and UPS monitoring module, and deep manipulation tools for reorganizing docks, shelves, and Grid Stacks on the fly. I also keep StartIsBack installed for restoring a classic Start Menu, and the 2 pair naturally if you want both a customized Start experience and a full dock replacement running together.

This specific 26.6 release added full support for pinning and managing Progressive Web Apps from Chrome, Brave, and Edge as if they were native desktop applications, something earlier versions couldn’t do, PWAs used to just get lumped in with regular browser windows. It also introduced edge-to-edge dock backgrounds that span the entire screen width or height for docks attached to a screen edge, plus a new Window Dodge auto-hide mode exclusive to the Ultimate edition.

The Ultimate tier’s real value sits in the manipulation tools: converting a Shelf tab into a standalone dock, detaching sub-docks, duplicating or deleting docks, all through drag-and-drop or context menu, without needing to rebuild a layout from scratch every time your workflow changes. Full hotkey control lets you assign shortcuts to sub-docks, Grid Stacks, and LaunchPads so they open instantly wherever your mouse happens to be.

System Requirements

  • Windows 7, 8.x, 10, or 11 (32-bit or 64-bit)
  • 1 GHz processor or higher
  • 1 GB RAM minimum
  • 100 MB free disk space for installation
  • DirectX-compatible graphics recommended for smooth animations

Why I Recommend

The PWA integration in this release solves a real annoyance for anyone running web apps as if they were native software. Having them grouped correctly and launchable from the dock, instead of tangled in with regular browser tabs, is a small fix that makes a noticeable daily difference if you rely on more than 1 or 2 PWAs.

Where the Ultimate upgrade is a harder sell is for casual users. The free Nexus dock already covers widgets, skins, and drag-and-drop, the core of what most people actually want from a dock. Ultimate’s hotkey manager, dock manipulation tools, and battery monitoring are genuinely powerful, but they’re built for power users customizing a workflow in real depth, not someone who just wants a nicer-looking taskbar.

If you’re building out a customized Windows desktop, our System Tools section has more utilities worth pairing with a dock replacement like Nexus.
