Typing in Hindi or another Indian language without a physical Devanagari keyboard used to mean learning a specific layout from scratch. I wrote about Nudi 4.0 for Kannada typing recently, but for Hindi and most other Indian languages, Google Input Tools is usually the first thing people search for, and “Rajbhasha” is one of the most common ways people phrase that search.
Google Input Tools is developed by Google, and it’s a phonetic typing tool that converts English (Roman script) keystrokes into native Indic script in real time. Type “namaste bharat” and it converts to proper Devanagari as you go, no separate keyboard layout to memorize. “Rajbhasha” itself isn’t a Google product name, it’s the Hindi term for “official language,” and it’s become the common search phrase people use when looking for Hindi typing tools, largely because Rajbhasha.net has built out dedicated download and typing pages around exactly that search intent. I also keep Kruti Dev to Mangal Converter bookmarked, since older Hindi documents built in the Kruti Dev font system often need converting before they’ll display correctly with newer Unicode-based typing tools like this one.
Google supports this phonetic transliteration approach for around a dozen Indian languages: Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Punjabi, Urdu, Sanskrit, and Nepali. The tool outputs proper Unicode text, meaning what you type works correctly in Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp, email, browsers, and government forms without needing to install a separate Hindi font pack alongside it.
There are 2 main ways to use it: the online typing tool that runs directly in a browser, and an offline Windows installer for each language that adds the input method to your language bar so you can type in any application system-wide, not just inside a browser tab. A separate “Hindi Classic” or legacy installer is also available for anyone specifically needing the older input style rather than the current phonetic version.

Why I Recommend
The phonetic approach is what makes this accessible to people who’ve never typed in an Indic script before. You don’t need to memorize where each character sits on a specialized keyboard layout, you just type the word roughly how it sounds in English and the suggestion engine handles the conversion.
The Unicode output also matters more than people realize until they run into a document that won’t display correctly. Older Hindi typing systems that relied on non-Unicode fonts often break when opened on a device that doesn’t have that exact font installed. Google Input Tools sidesteps that problem entirely by outputting standard Unicode from the start.
If you’re setting up a multilingual typing workflow, it’s worth browsing our Office Productivity section for complementary tools like font converters that pair well with Google Input Tools, particularly if you’re bridging older Kruti Dev documents into a Unicode-based workflow.
