SoftPerfect RAM Disk when I was looking for a way to speed up some older software I still use. Turns out, it’s a small program that takes a chunk of your computer’s memory (RAM) and turns it into a drive that works just like any other in Windows. The difference is, because it’s running entirely in RAM, it’s ridiculously fast — way faster than my SSD, and light-years ahead of a regular hard drive.
For things like browser cache, temp files, or even game files you load a lot, it’s a bit of a secret weapon. You don’t hear many people talking about it, but once you set it up, you can tell the difference almost immediately. Plus, it saves wear on your SSD, which isn’t a bad thing if you’re planning to keep your drive for years.
One thing I liked: you can make more than one RAM disk. So, for example, I had one just for my temp files and another for project files I was working on that week. And if you’re worried about losing everything when you turn off the PC, the program can save the contents to a file and reload it next time.

It’s not demanding at all:
- Works on Windows 7 up to Windows 11 (both 32-bit and 64-bit)
- Any half-decent CPU will do (1 GHz or more)
- Needs at least 2 GB RAM, though 4 GB or more is better if you’re making bigger disks
- About 10 MB of free disk space for the program itself
- You’ll need admin rights to set it up
